This is a classic! Especially for the young ones, this book’s rhyme will have you inspired by it’s own magic! I recommend reading this on Christmas eve morning. The kids will be excited for bedtime all day long!

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

Another classic! Kids love the illustration in this great tale of a boy’s train ride to see Santa! If you want to have some fun with the kids, give them bells to represent Santa’s sleigh and make the best hot chocolate ever with the recipe below:

Best Homemade Hot Chocolate

This rich and creamy hot chocolate is super easy to make, and has intense chocolate flavor. Garnish with whipped cream or marshmallows for a cold weather treat!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Cook Time 10 minutes

Total Time15 minutes

Servings 2 servings

Calories 470kcal

Ingredients

2 cups whole milk

2 tbsp sugar *

4 oz bittersweet chocolate chopped (just under 1 cup measured)

splash of vanilla extract optional

whipped cream optional

marshmallows optional

Instructions

  1. Combine milk and sugar in a small saucepan and place on the stovetop over medium heat.
  2. While the milk is heating place the chopped chocolate in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Take the chocolate out and stir it. Return to microwave and heat for another thirty seconds, remove and stir. Continue to heat and stir the chocolate in 30 second intervals until just melted.
  3. When the milk reaches the scalding point (180 degrees F, with bubbles on the side), turn off the heat and add the melted chocolate, whisking to combine. Add the vanilla extract now, if desired. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if using, and enjoy!

Notes

Make sure you don’t overheat the milk. You want it to just have bubbles on the sides, about 180 degrees F. You do not want the milk to boil.

*If you use a sweeter chocolate such as semisweet or milk chocolate, you may want to reduce or eliminate the sugar altogether. You can always sweeten to taste at the end.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss

This Dr. Seuss original is fun and exciting. If you want, have an older child read it! As a snack to go along with this read aload, make a Grinch Kabob! Then watch the movie.

Olive the Other Reindeer by Vivian Walsh

This quirky tale of Olive the dog who thinks she too is a reindeer is funny and charming. Read aloud with the kids and see if they pick up on humor! Then pick any way in the following link to make your kiddos their own set of antlers!

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

This story is a great one for the whole family to hear. O’Henry reminds us of the spirit of giving and generosity. It’s not about the gift but about the heart. This is a great story to read at night. To help the kids understand the spirit of the season ask your kids to go pick out one older toy (that’s in good condition) to give to Toys for Tots.

Last but not least….. Make sure to take to time to read aloud the any part of the Infancy Narrative on Christmas eve! I personally am a fan of the segment below, but any will do! Don’t forget what all this is about:

The True Meaning of Christmas

And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.

 And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people;

for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:8-14 RSV
