A Hot Buttered Rum

This issue’s drink is made especially to keep warm and feel like Christmas, as it has been described by some as “Christmas in a cup”. Now there are three ways to make this drink and so we added a recipe for each way. May you stay warm and have a Merry Christmas!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup dark rum

What To Do Next

Bring water, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt to a boil in a 1 1/2- to 2-quart saucepan over moderately high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, whisking occasionally, 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in rum. Serve hot.

What You’ll Need

Bitters (2 dashes)

Dark Rum (3 oz. or, a shot and a half)

Butter (1 teaspoon, on an actual teaspoon)

3-4 Cloves

Glass or pewter mug and enough piping hot water to fill said mug.

What To Do Next

Dash the bitters into a glass or pewter mug. Add the rum and place the teaspoon with the butter in the rum. Pour piping hot water into the mug. Sprinkle a few cloves on top. Stir with the spoon and allow to steep for a few minutes. Inhale freely, sip cautiously!

What You’ll Need

Mug

Boiling water

Rum (to taste, at least a shot or two)

Ground cinnamon (a few shakes)

Butter (not too much, just a pat to taste, remember, this is going into your drink and many a drink has been ruined with too much butter, plus you can always add more but you can’t take more out, be careful with this one)

Brown sugar (to taste, a teaspoon or two)

A shake of nutmeg (if you want, not necessary)

A shake of imitation vanilla (also not necessary, but better than nutmeg)

What To Do Next

Boil water. While the water is boiling put all ingredients in the mug. Pour the boiling water into the mug on top of the mix. Stir and wait until the butter is melted, sip and enjoy!
